French Immersion and Year Round Program Changes
On May 12, 2020, the Board of Trustees voted to cancel both the French Immersion and Year Round Programs currently operating out of École Queen Elizabeth School in order to submit a balanced budget to Alberta Education as both programs are underfunded.
What you need to know going forward:
- École Queen Elizabeth School has been reconfigured for the 2020-2021 school year to offer Kindergarten to Grade 8 Programming in English on the Regular Year Calendar
- Students enrolled at École Queen Elizabeth School in 2019-2020 in both French Immersion and Year-Round Programs will be automatically registered at Queen Elizabeth for the 2020-2021 school year, as the attendance boundary for Queen Elizabeth will not change
French Language Learning in 2020-2021
Queen Elizabeth School will be offering French Language Instruction (not French Immersion) to interested students in the 2020-2021 school year, as we anticipate implementing a viable 9-year (9Y) French as a Second Language (FSL) Program for the following school year.
The purpose of French Immersion Programming is to teach French as a Second Language through near complete immersion in the French Language. Students learn all of their literacy and numeracy skills through French.
French Language Instruction is different from French Immersion. French Language Instruction allows students the opportunity to learn the French language, not learn through the French language. Students learn all of their literacy and numeracy skills in English.
Students who wish to participate in French Language Learning will have 3 classes a week in grades 1-4, and 2 classes a week in grades 5-8.
